Why We’re Ditching Chocolate Guilt This Easter

Easter Picnic Food and Drink

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: we loovvve Easter time. Gorgey pastel dinner tables, adorable bunnies, fab friends, and oodles of choccy. (PSA: Check out OnlyMine’s decadent hand-painted chocolate Easter eggs to level up your Easter game this year. 15/10 Yumminess!)

But if we’re being perfectly honest, one thing that we have found missing from our Easters in recent years is the pure elation and unbridled joy of ~guilt-free~ chocolate consumption. You know what we’re talking about, right? When you were a kid and you would bite into your easter bunny, ears first, and delight in the extra-thick bit as you nommed away in pre breakfast chocolatey heaven. And nobody would say a thing about it. And most importantly, you wouldn’t say a thing about it.

So, in the spirit of taking back wholeheartedly unapologetic indulgence of chocolate this Easter, please enjoy the following reasons why chocolate is actually good for you, as endorsed by science. (And we’re talking the good stuff, like 70% cocoa or more—sorry Caramilk lovers!)

Chocolate is full of antioxidants!

Dark chocolate contains a huge variety of goodies called antioxidants— even more than most fruits! Because we’re getting our nerd on, and backing this up with #science, we’re excited to share that one study we found showed that dark chocolate had more antioxidant activity (meaning polyphenols, flavanols and catechins) than the superfood açai berries!

If you have deleted high school biology and chemistry from your brain (Same, girl. Same.) antioxidants are the goodies that protect our cells from UV damage and free-radicals, therefore playing a role in cancer prevention and organ health.

Chocolate helps heal a broken heart

This goes without saying, really. Obviously anybody suffering heartbreak requires a prescription for chocolate, ASAP. But in a very real sense, the cocoa in chocolate is extremely good for heart health! One of the antioxidants we spoke about above, Flavanols, are super handy in reducing the cell damage that causes heart disease (one of the biggest health issues we face here in Australia). Flavanols also help lower blood pressure and improve vascular function. Remember though: the darker the chocolate, the better for you.

Chocolate keeps your brain young

We all pay A LOT of attention to keeping our skin youthful, but have you given much thought to your brain? If you already play brain games like Wordle (addictive, much?) and Lumosity, you’re off to great start. But adding a square of dark chocolate to your daily medicines could also be very helpful. (Oh, if we must...) A 2016 study we found in the journal Appetite shows that eating chocolate at least once a week (think you could manage more?) could improve your cognitive function. As we transition into Autumn and Winter, you can even curl up with a hot chocolate and drink in the goodness.

Scientists (at Harvard, so you know it must be true) have shown that drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day could help keep the brain healthy and reduce memory decline. This is especially important as you age, because our new friends, flavanols, help improve blood flow to the brain in areas where it may otherwise become damaged.

Easter Picnic Table

So please believe us when we (and the scientists!) tell you that creating a balanced relationship with dark chocolate may have a marked positive impact on your overall health! Hooray! We’ll drink to that! And after the last two years, we have lots of pent-up celebrating to do!

This April, please join us in returning to the unashamed, joyful and free-spirited Easters of yesteryear. Eat. Drink. Be truly merry. Remember that science is on your side, we are in your corner, and we’ll be right there with you, licking melted chocolate off our fingers and going in for more. Please help us spread the word. Don’t let anyone talk calories at the Easter table. Tell everyone they look heckin’ fabulous. Build them up. Share chocolate. Share stories. Share love.

Let’s have the best Easter we’ve had in a long, long time. Cheers!
